A bank statement feels authoritative in a way few documents do. It has a bank's name on it. It's dense with transactions. Nobody reads it line by line.

Which is exactly why it's one of the most-faked documents in finance. Fake bank statements appear in loan applications, rental files, visa applications and vendor onboarding — sometimes wholly invented, more often a real statement with a few numbers "improved."

The checks that catch them come in three layers. Run them in order; each layer is cheaper than the one after it.

Layer one: the running balance

Every bank statement is a ledger, and ledgers obey one rule: previous balance, plus credit or minus debit, equals next balance — every single row.

Fraudsters who alter a transaction almost never re-flow every balance after it. Pick five random rows and do the arithmetic. If any row breaks, you're done — no forensic tools required. If someone bumped a deposit from $1,200 to $12,000, either the running balance breaks immediately, or they've maintained a fiction through two hundred subsequent rows. Most don't.

For statements delivered as PDFs — most of them, now — the file itself is evidence a human review never touches.

A genuine bank PDF is generated in one pass by the bank's document system: one creation event, a recognizable producer string, no editing history. A tampered one has usually been through an editor, and PDF forensics sees the traces: modification dates after the statement period, an editing tool in the producer chain, revision history physically embedded in the file with the original numbers still recoverable underneath, and font substitutions on exactly the rows that changed.

This is the layer where automation changes the economics. Balance math on a sampled basis and squinting at column edges is what humans can sustain; a scanner runs structure, metadata, fonts and arithmetic on every statement in a file, in seconds, and shows its reasoning.

When the statement passes everything

Then you've established the document is clean — created once, by plausible software, internally consistent, untouched since. What no document check establishes is that the account and money are real. For decisions that warrant it, direct bank verification (open-banking data, or the applicant's read-only account link) replaces the document question entirely. The forensic layer's job is to make sure the cheap path — trusting the paper — isn't a trap.

What's the fastest single check on a bank statement?

The running balance. Five random rows, basic arithmetic, thirty seconds. It catches the single most common alteration — an inflated deposit — with no tools at all.

Are PDF bank statements easier or harder to fake than paper?

Easier to edit — any PDF editor opens them. Much harder to edit cleanly, because the file records the editing: metadata changes, revision history, font substitution. Paper destroys that evidence but introduces scanner artifacts instead.

Do banks verify statements for third parties?

Generally not directly for you. The modern equivalents are open-banking verification (with the customer's consent) or asking the applicant to link the account read-only. Both beat any document check — when the relationship justifies the friction.

Someone sent a statement as a photo. Now what?

Treat it as an image-forensics problem: pasted-region detection, resolution seams, clone marks — and all the arithmetic still applies. Also ask why it's a photo. Banks deliver PDFs; a photographed statement is sometimes innocent and sometimes a way to destroy file evidence.
